Measuring
for Mantel Dimensions |
|
We
requires 4 simple dimensions to be able to make
your custom-sized mantel.
| A |
The
Width of the Opening, between the two
legs of the mantel. (E)
This is not the width of your fireplace
box opening, but rather than the width
of the fireplace opening plus the proper
clearance width of each side.
Minimal 6" of each side from the
opening fireplace is required by the
local fire code. For example: If
your fireplace opening is 40" wide
and your local fire code requires
6" clearance on each side, then
dimension E would be 52 (6+40+6). |
| B |
The
Height of the Opening. (F)
This is not the height of your
fireplace opening, but rather than the
height from the surface (hearth) to the
top of your fireplace opening, plus the
proper clearance above the opening.
Minimal 12" from the top fireplace
is required by the local fire code.
For example: If the top of your
fireplace opening is 30" high and
your local fire code requires 12"
clearance, then dimension F would be 42
(30+12). |
| C |
The
Thickness of Tile / Brick / Marble. (M)
This is a thickness of your masonry
(tile, brick, or marble) measure from
the wall. If the masonry is flush
with the wall, then dimension M would be
0. |
| D |
The
Height of the fireplace. (L)
This is also the height dimension of the
masonry. The height should be
measured from the top surface of the
hearth to the top of the masonry.
We need this dimension to know where to
place the mounts for attaching the
mantel against the wall. |
Code Information
When specifying your measurements for E and F, you
must include proper clearance between the
fireplace opening and the mantel woodwork. Typical
minimum clearance is 6" on each side and
12" on the top, but you should rely on Local
Building Codes and the firebox manufacturer's
specifications for the proper clearance.
Please consult your local fire Marshall or
Building officer. Conforming to Building
Code is the homeowner's responsibility.
